Otto sinks birdie putt to take Spudland tourney

    PRESQUE ISLE — Trailing by a stroke with one hole to play, Patrick Otto made a 22-foot birdie putt to capture the 45th annual Coca-Cola Spudland Open golf tournament, held July 28 and 29 at Presque Isle Country Club.

    Competing in the event was a field of 200 players, which was the largest in “several years,” according to PICC pro Barry Madore

 

    Otto, who hails from the Portland area, shot a 143 during the 36-hole event. He went into play Sunday in a three-way tie for second place, a stroke behind 18-hole leader Ralph Michaud of Presque Isle.

    Runner-up Todd Newlands, who was part of the three-way tie, ended up as the runner-up. He led the tourney heading into the 18th hole Sunday, but shot a bogey to close out his round. Newlands still captured the Joseph J. Freeman Memorial Award as having the lowest gross score among PICC members.

    The overall low net title went to Aaron Keirstead, also of PICC, who posted a score of 131.

    Another highlight of the tournament was the 177 shot by 90-year-old Dewey Dewitt of Houlton. He shot below his age on Saturday with an 87 before matching it Sunday. His total of 177 was good for third for D Division gross scores.

    The top eight golfers for gross and net in the four divisions were as follows:

    A Division gross: first, Newlands, 144; second, Michaud, 147; third, Steve Clark, 149; fourth, Lance Bernier, 152; fifth, Dave Bolster, 152; sixth, Kent Johnson, 153; seventh, Mitch Orser, 155; and eighth, Phil Pelletier, 155.

    A net: first, Spencer Deschene, 138; second, Barry Hobart, 139; third, Robbie Watson, 139; fourth, Porter Gervais, 141; fifth, Jerry York, 142; sixth, A.J. Harris, 143; seventh, John Smith, 144; and eighth, Rick Boody, 144.

    B gross: first, Jonathan Humphrey, 152; second, Dan Hotham, 158; third, Evan Waddell, 158; fourth, Mike Fleming, 159; fifth, Peter Hughes, 160; sixth, Jim Wilson, 160; seventh, Ben Deschene, 161; and eighth, Ryan Denison, 162.

    Saturday’s closest to pin winners were Kent Johnson (12 feet, 2 inches on hole No. 4), Porter Gervais (4 feet, 9 inches on hole No. 8), Rick Bouchard (3 feet, 1 inch on hole No. 16) and Jamie Leavitt (10 feet, 1 inch on hole No. 17). Sunday’s winners were Kevin Hughes (7 feet, 7 inches on hole No. 4), Dave Bolster (2 feet, 5 inches on hole No. 8), Chuck Stevens (1 foot, 5 inches on hole No. 16) and Tony Reynolds (8 feet, 4 inches on hole No. 17). The longest drive winner both days was Peter Coffin.

    The top three in the driving contest in the open division were Jamie Leavitt (312 yards), Lance Bernier (309) and Ron McAtee (298). The top three in the senior division were Dwight Dawson (289), Rick Bouchard (270) and Barry Hobart (265).
