The Easton Kiwanis Club held a steak barbecue at the home of Loris and Mike Allen on Monday the 6th of August with Kiwanis members and friends and family. The meal was a treat for those who had worked in the Kiwanis’ booth at the fair this month and those who stopped by to chat. Dana Dickinson of Presque Isle worked the grill and made a delicious cake for the event. New peas and potatoes were served along with another cake made by the hostess. Esther Richardson, a member, arrived in a wheelchair after having had both of her feet operated on recently. She will be late returning to her teaching duties.
The Easton United Methodist Women met at the church dining room on Wednesday, Aug. 15, with only six members present. The meeting was opened with devotions by Marjorie Corey, the “Lord’s Prayer” and the word for the month, ‘Answer.’ This was followed by the repeating of the Purpose by the group. The treasurer, Marie Hewitt, reported that the table at Easton Field Days brought in $246.50. One large quilt was sold and two baby ones. There are two quilt tops to be tacked before the November sale. The six people there had made 15 visitations this month. For Community Service, one member serves at the Martha and Mary Food Kitchen each week and another drives a woman to work when needed and helps her get her groceries home. A thank-you note was read by the president from Joe Lockhart thanking the group for their donation to the Gidions Bible project. Under Old Business it was reported that a Mission Pin had been given to Lynn Blevins, the minister’s wife, for all she does for these two churches and the Monticello one as well, which completed the Five Star Program. Under New Business it was voted to make a donation to the Mars Hill Food Cupboard and another to the Presque Isle Red Cross. It was also voted to hold the Fall Sale on Nov. 17. There will be just a craft table and a food sale. There will be no Trash and Treasure Sale this year, so for you who usually donate items, we ask that you do not do it this year. The president reported that she was starting another stuffed toy box for Iraqi children in a hospital over there and also a box of flip-flops or slippers or sandals also for the children there. Birthday cards were signed for Avis Hume and Kempton Adams. Refreshments were served by Glenice Craig. Those attending were Lindy Fowler, Glenice Craig, Freda Dionne, Marjorie Corey, Marie Hewitt and Eldora Carter.
Visits
Liana and Paul DeMerchant have recently returned from their vacation in Alaska. They flew out of Portland for the cruise ship on which they spent several days. Sixty-three countries were represented on that cruise and Liana said the food was wonderful – perhaps a few pounds too wonderful. They stopped overnight in Vancouver, then stopped in Seward where they took a train trip to Anchorage. They saw the big Hubbard Glacier as well as some smaller ones on the cruise. They got to look at the earthquake fault in Anchorage and saw some of the Dall sheep, the big-horned ones. After the train trip they rented a camper and took in more in Anchorage and visited one of Liana’s farther’s relatives, Annie Olson, in Big Lake. They camped in her yard. Paul got in some good fishing, catching five silver salmon. They ate two and gave the rest to Annie. They went up a ways to see some mountains, especially Mt. McKinley. Liana wanted to explore more and Paul wanted to get back to fishing. They said they didn’t seem to know when to go to bed because sunset wasn’t until about 10 p.m. On their way home they left the camper in Anchorage and were taken to the airport at 5 p.m. but didn’t get a plane out of there until 1 a.m. the next morning. They had a wonderful time and are ready to go again as soon as they can.
Dottie and Duncan Beaton have just returned from a trip to Coralville, Iowa, where they visited their daughter, Dawn Quelle, husband, Fred and children, Ben and Catherine. Duncan got in some good ice skating at the mall and Dottie got some needed rest and time spent with her grandchildren.
Darrell and Norma Porter, of Pittston, were overnight guests of his sister and brother-in-law, Eldora and Clair Carter. He came especially to visit their aunt, Pearl Botting, in the Madigan Nursing Home in Houlton. He also brought some stuffed toys for Eldora to put in the Unithed Women’s box for children in an Iraqi hospital.
Jonah Alexander moved back home some time ago from where he worked in Seaford, Del., and is now working for his stepfather, Kevin Pelletier. He is having a new house built on the lower end of the Fuller Road, just west of Hughie Gray’s.
Bob and Norma Dinsmore just recently returned to their home and were very glad to get a cool breath of air.
Wendell (Pop) and Marion Morse have returned to their home in Palm Bay, Fla., after spending a few weeks camping behind his brother-in-law, Paul Bradley’s, home. They were able to visit with Paul at the Southern Acres Boarding Home and with some of Marion’s relatives in Canada.
New arrivals
Congratulations to proud first-time parents, Tate and Michele MacPherson, of Presque Isle, on the birth of their new baby daughter. Little Caitlyn Olivia was born at The Aroostook Medical Center on July 20, 2007. The maternal first-time grandparents are Ira and Janna Dodge, of Easton, and the paternal grandparents are Howard and Jean MacPherson, of Bridgewater.
A belated congratulations to Kaitee and Chris Mills of Easton on the birth of their little daughter, Phoenix Madison Mills, on June 30, 2007 at The Aroostook Medical Center. The maternal grandparents are Tony Tompkins, of Easton, and Jeanie McGowan, also of Easton, and the paternal grandparents are Frank Mills, of Easton, and Debbie Bevins, of Easton.
Carrie and Rick Hull of Easton were made grandparents once more by the birth of little Jonathan Devlin Martin, born to their daughter, Elizabeth and Andrew Martin, of Presque Isle. Little Jonathan was born at TMAC on July 3, 2007 weighing in at 8 pounds and 2 ounces. This is their first baby. Congratulations.
