From the Bunkers – Week of July 6, 2020

NEW LIMERICK, Maine — We hope you all had a wonderful Fourth of July weekend with friends and family. It was great to see many families enjoying the golf course this weekend.

The good news is that we have opened the 18th green for play again. We are now working on the seventh green with more seed and tarping the upper level. When playing, if your ball winds up on the tarp, you can retrieve it and play from a drop zone to the left of green. More tarps have been ordered to help with the fourth and fifth greens.

On our calendar this week will be the Houlton High School Alumni Association four-person Scramble tournament. It will be a nine-hole event starting at 9 a.m. Saturday, July 11. You can call the clubhouse to register yourself or your team. This is open to all to play. You don’t have to be a graduate of Houlton High. Come on out and have some fun while supporting the Alumni Association.

Coming up in August will be the County Open. Play will commence on Saturday, Aug. 8, at Houlton Golf Course with an 18-hole stroke play tournament. Handicaps will be used to break players into different flights. Sunday’s tournament will be held in Island Falls at VaJoWa Golf Club. It will be an 18 hole four person Scramble.

This golf tournament has been around for over 30 years and continues to support the Houlton Health Foundation. Call Lori Weston @ 521-2147 for an application or to ask for more info. Let’s make this a big year with a very large turnout.

The Babe Caron Memorial will be played over the Labor Day weekend. It’s a two day tournament, two person best ball format with handicaps. This fills up early so pick your teammate and get to practicing.

If you are looking for a change in your in town restaurants, make the short trip out to The Lakeside Restaurant at the golf course. Your Chef, Aaron Paul is providing a wonderful palette of tastes. Some old familiar meals and some exciting new dinners. Call the Lakeside at 207-805-5250 for reservations .

As we head into summer golf, remember to drink lots of water on these warm humid days. And a bit of golf etiquette, at our course, please get permission from the clubhouse to start play on hole seven. And make sure players are not coming to the green on six, so you don’t cut in front of them.

Remember it is the players responsibility to repair their ball marks on the greens. If you have time, fix two. This will help our greens get back in shape. Most of all, just have fun. Maybe I’ll see you out on the course.

Houlton Community Golf Course is located on 6 Country Club Drive in New Limerick. For more information on the course call 532-2662, email houltongolf@gmail.com or visit their website www.houltongolf.com.
