HOULTON, Maine — Houlton’s Southside School is sending out a letter to students and staff members who were potentially exposed after a person associated with the school was tested positive for COVID-19.
In a letter dated Jan. 11, RSU 29 Superintendent Ellen Halliday confirmed that a person of the school had tested positive, and that those who had been exposed must be quarantined for 10 days. The school district was also in contact with the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention and following the proper protocols and procedures.
For now, the school will continue to be in session for those who were not exposed.
“Many recent studies have shown that schools are one of the safest places for our students to be,” wrote Halliday in the letter, which was also posted on social media. “It cannot be stressed enough however, that we all continue to practice appropriate precautions such as wearing face coverings and practicing social distancing outside of our schools as well.”
It’s the second time an instance of a positive case has been identified in an individual associated with the school within the last month. On Dec. 15, RSU 29 announced that two cases had been reported at Southside School along with Houlton Elementary School. Houlton High School had also gone remote for several days prior to winter break due to positive cases of COVID-19 being reported at the school.
