DYER BROOK, Maine — The Southern Aroostook girls basketball team began the 2021 season on a high note, blasting its way to a 77-24 victory over Hodgdon Tuesday evening.

Nearly every member of the Warrior roster got into the scoring action, as coach Cliff Urquhart went to his bench early and often throughout the contest. As has been the case in recent years, the Warriors came out quickly, scoring multiple times off turnovers thanks to its ferocious pressure defense.

Madison Russell led the Warriors with 19 points, including nine in the first quarter alone. Camie Shields added 18 points, including 11 in the second quarter. Maddie Shields chipped in with 12 points, while Paige Vose had seven.

Southern Aroostook hit six 3-pointers on the night as the team regularly converted from the perimeter. Maddie Shields led the team with three baskets behind the 3-point arc.

For Hodgdon, Aleyah Matheson paced the team with six points, while Sadie Thompson added five.

The Warriors led 19-6, 42-12 and 59-18 at the quarter breaks.
