Girls grades 3 and 4 soccer
On Friday, Aug. 31, Grace Player staked the Galaxy to an early 2-0 lead over the Tornado on its way to the 5-1 win. Olivia Hudson also popped one in to give the Galaxy the 3-0 lead at intermission. Hudson rounded out the scoring with two second-half tallies. Marisa Sloan blasted a free kick in for the Tornado’s lone goal.The Tornado picked up their first win of the season last Wednesday, topping the Blizzard 2-1. Page Kidney gave the Tornado the early lead when she broke away on the right side, then cut to the middle, blasting the ball past the keeper. Rachel Maxwell tied it up early in the second half for the Blizzard. The teams went back and forth, but neither team could get past the opposition’s defense. The Tornado got some fine defensive play from Emily Sjoberg, Alexandra Michaud and Brittany Warner. The Blizzard defense was spearheaded by the play of Victoria Williamson, Skyler McAtee and Abigail Shaw, who really had a nose for the ball. Alison Bell broke through the stingy Blizzard defense to tally the eventual game-winning goal late in the second half.
Last Wednesday also saw a battle of unbeaten teams, as the Galaxy and Hurricane met up. The teams played a scoreless first half, with the Hurricane creating plenty of chances with a front line of Taylor Williams, Cassidy Soucier and Kailee Ferris. The trio couldn’t get the ball past goalie Alyssa Sweeney though, who made incredible save after incredible save. The Galaxy finally broke through about halfway through the second half with the game’s first goal. Olivia Hudson weaved her way through the Tornado defense, blasting the ball into the back of the net. A few minutes later, Hudson gave the Galaxy a 2-0 lead on another breakaway goal. Taylor Williams cut the lead in half, putting the Tornado on the board with just over four minutes left. They would get no closer, as Grace Player and Regan Nelson cleared away any opportunities the Tornado had and the Galaxy held on for the 2-1 win.
Boys grades 3 and 4 soccer
The Sounders downed the Crunch 5-0 on Friday, Aug. 31. Zach Rice scored two breakaway goals in the first half to get the offense going for the Sounders. Parker Lambert also added two goals, with both Rice and Gavin Kelley picking up assists. Cole Staples blasted in a free kick for the fifth goal.
The Sounders picked up another win last Wednesday afternoon, this time besting the Blast 7-0. Parker Lambert got the scoring going when he finished off a pass from Cole Staples. Zach Rice gave the Sounders the 2-0 lead as he maneuvered through the defense just before intermission. The Blast created chances with Josiah Morse and Micah Taubin, but they couldn’t get the ball past defensive stopper Grant Bridges.
Parker Lambert got the scoring going again in the second half, scoring on a breakaway goal. Zach Rice scored the next two goals, the first of which came off an assist from Gavin Kelley.
The Blast tried to stage a comeback, with Cooper Madore and Noah Kinney keeping pressure on the Sounders’ defense. Gavin Kelley stopped that flurry when he gathered the loose ball up and gave the Sounders the 6-0 lead. Parker Lambert rounded out the scoring with his third goal of the game.
Girls grades 5 and 6 soccer
Cameo Madore and Renee Browning combined for the shutout in goal to help lead the Crew past the Mutiny, 1-0. Ashley Trask and Rachel Patenaude also teamed up on defense to stifle the Mutiny’s offensive runs, led by Shannon Sweeney and Jacqueline Lambert. The trio of Emma Kinney, Erin Ackerson and Danielle Allen kept the Crew offense in check until Carly Bell broke through late in the first half to score the game’s only goal.
The Clash and Rapids battled to a 3-3 tie Thursday afternoon. Krystal Kingsbury gave the Clash the early lead, taking the kickoff the length of the field to score the quickest goal of the season so far. Kingsbury made it 2-0 in favor of the Clash when she converted off a pass from Rachel Hobbs. Joan Overman cut the lead in half when she pounded in a loose ball in front of the net. Jenna Hallett tied it up for the Rapids just before halftime, scoring unassisted. Hallett scored her second goal of the game in the second half, this time finishing off a penalty kick.
Both teams battled back and forth until Bridgette Carrier found Kaleigh Kinney open in front of the net. Kinney, after some fancy footwork, pushed the ball in just out of the goalie’s reach to tie the game.
Boys grades 5 and 6 soccer
The Express jumped out to the early lead, but the Sting battled back to earn the 2-2 tie in action last Tuesday afternoon. The Express took the early lead thanks to the offensive pressure from Matthew Tilley and Ben Buckley. Tilley stole the ball from the Sting defense, then pushed the ball ahead to a streaking Buckley for the goal.
Ben Nickerson tied the game for the Sting early in the second half, then gave them the 2-1 lead moments later when he corralled a loose ball and knifed through the Express defense.
Ben Buckley put in the equalizer later in the second half, this time finishing off a pass from Joseph Patenaude.
The second game saw the Kicks down the Strikers 4-1 for their first win of the season. Trent Wilson gave the Kicks the early lead, scoring on a breakaway late in the first half. The Strikers came back to tie it up early in the second half off a penalty kick goal from Aaron Kofstad. Trevor Levesque put the Kicks back up with an unassisted goal, and Chase Norton added an insurance goal off an assist from Austin Albert. Albert then rounded out the scoring with a goal of his own.
Nick Raineri’s goal late in the second half proved to be the difference in the Sting’s 1-0 victory over the Strikers. Ben Nickerson got the assist.
The Sting had several good opportunities in the first half, but all were turned away by either sweeper Colin McKay or goalie Cody Lyford. The Strikers created many counterattacks, but no one could get the ball past the defense of Nick Raineri, Liam Hughes and Kaleb Donovan.
Defense was also the name of the game in the Kicks-Express matchup. The two teams played to a 0-0 halftime score, although the Express pressured the Kicks’ defense for most of the opening frame.
Drew Bates turned away shot after shot, not allowing any of the Express attackers to get the ball into the goal. The second half saw the momentum swing in the Kicks’ favor, as they began to control play in the Express end. Ryder Soucy, Arjuna Elliott and Austin Albert all had multiple chances, with Soucy finally being able to slip the ball past the diving John Freeman.
The Express picked up the intensity following the goal, but no shots got past Chase Norton, and the Kicks held on for the 1-0 win.
Bridge Club
Bridge is now being offered at the William V. Haskell Community Center. The group meets each Tuesday from noon-4 p.m.
