75 Years Ago – July 3, 1947
Robertson received a degree — Keith H. Robertson, son of Mrs. Mildred Roberston, received his A.B. degree from Dartmouth College, having completed the degree requirements in three and one-half years. During the war, he was in the U.S. Navy for two years.
Received doctor’s degree — Carl P. Duncan, son of Mr. and Mrs. B.H. Duncan of Presque Isle, was awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Brown University, June 14. Dr. Duncan received the degree in the field of philosophy. Graduating from Presque Isle High School in the Class of 1938, he entered the University of Maine, where he received an A.B. degree in 1942. He also held an M.A. degree from Brown University. Dr. Duncan had been appointed Assistant Professor of Psychology at Northwestern University.
Fort Kent man received medal — Raoul Pelletier of Fort Kent received the Bronze Star medal for valor at a ceremony at Presque Isle Army Recruiting Station, the presentation being made by Capt. George V. Thayer, commanding officer of the station. The medal was awarded by the commanding general of the Mediterranean Theater of Operations. Mr. Pelletier was parachuted into enemy territory over France during the war to assist in organizing the underground.
50 Years Ago – July 5, 1972
Most valuable athletes — Three young men were chosen as Northern Maine Vocational Technical Institute’s most valuable athletes for the 1971-72 year. Jim Crowley was elected for the category of baseball while Boyd Pettetier was deemed in wrestling competition, and Arman Sleeper excelled in the game of baseball.
Moskowitz studying in Israel — Andrew Moskowitz, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl I. Moskowitz of Presque Isle, a dean’s list student at Brandeis University, spent the first semester of his junior year at The Hiatt Institute, Jerusalem, Israel. Brandeis University, through its Hiatt Institute, offered to honor students attending American universities and colleges a one-semester program of study in Israel. The entire class of 45 honor students accepted for this semester traveled extensively throughout Israel. Prior to his arrival in Israel, Moskowitz traveled in Europe, camper’s style, backpack fashion.
Greetings from the V.P. — Melvin Cleaves and Danny King of Easton were greeted in Washington, D.C., by Sammy Peebles of Brewton, Alabama, national vice president of the Southern Region of the Future Farmers of America. The Easton FFA chapter members attended the weeklong National FFA Washington Conference program.
25 Years Ago – July 2, 1997
Lifeline supporters — Terry Brewer of Mars Hill was the winner in a raffle to raise money for The Aroostook Medical Center’s Health Group. The raffle raised $1,000 for the Lifeline Emergency Response System, which benefits Aroostook County’s elderly. He won a fishing trip for two on the Restigouche River in New Brunswick.
Best in the State — The 1/152 FA Battery B returned from annual training in C.F.B. Gagetown, N.B., where they won the Best Unit Award for 1997. Members included Trevor Bennett, Calvin Hafford, Frank Drew, Norm Ginish, Dave Grant, Brian Keith, John McGary, Mike McAfee, Dave Harris, Clark Rafford, Del Hastey, Steve McQueen, Merlin Burpee, Phil Conley, Daryl Hanning, Mark Britton, Earl Little, Bob Greenier, George Merritt, Bruce Campbell, Joe Miller, Herb Smith, Ralph Bartman, Shawn Gurney (XO), Kim Archer (1st Sgt.), and Jeff Squires (Commander).
Volunteer recognition — Gould Memorial Hospital in Presque Isle held an awards ceremony recognizing the efforts and dedication of its 64 volunteers.
Honorary member — Dr. Eric Nicholas received honorary membership in the Central Aroostook High School National Honor Society for his contributions to the school and youth of the community.
