MAPLETON — Representatives from Presque Isle will be on hand Thursday, April 17, for an informational meeting to discuss plans for the Community Center project.
“The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at the Lions’ Hall at 1713 Main St., and will serve as a joint meeting of Mapleton and Presque Isle officials from the Community Center Committee. The event is open to the public,” said Jon Frederick, town manager.
Frederick said Mapleton officials are looking for public input on the proposed project and how Mapleton, Chapman and Castle Hill might fit into the plans.
“This is an opportunity to let selectmen know how they feel,” said the town manager.
Mapleton has an active rec program, with plans currently underway for summer programming.
“The summer rec program begins in June and runs through the end of July. We have Little League, daytime rec programs including swimming and arts and crafts. We also offer kickball, dancing, baseball and basketball,” Frederick said.
The cost for summer activities is $15 per program, with multi-program discounts available.
“Jacob Graham is our rec director. Last year was his first year. He started the fall soccer program and the school basketball program,” said Frederick.
Frederick said the April 17 meeting will provide municipal officials a chance to provide information and answer questions.
“This gives the committee a chance to explain what the project is about, as well as the proposal by Presque Isle’s City Council. The proposal has been on the minds of all the selectmen as well as residents. This is an opportunity for all to obtain more information on the matter,” said Frederick.
Presque Isle’s councilors earlier this winter proposed approaching neighboring communities to offer each a “buy-in opportunity,” whereby municipalities, in exchange for helping fund the construction of the Community Center, would gain free admission to the facility for their respective residents rather than pay usage fees for participating in programs, as has been the practice with past Presque Isle rec activities. Due to the distance, East Chapman youth have for years taken part in Presque Isle Rec programs rather than travel to Mapleton to participate in activities there.
