75 Years Ago – Feb. 12, 1948
Ricker Wins And Loses Down State – Winning one and losing one was the story of the Ricker Junior College basketeers over the weekend. A pair of teams from Central Maine, M. C. I. at Pittsfield and the Cold Frosh at Waterville played hosts to the Aroostook Club.
Friday night the Bubarmen outshot the Maine Central Institute team in the third and fourth stanzas to win the game by a comfortable ten point margin 57-47. At the end of the first quarter. Ricker had the Central Mainers 10-6, but in the second frame all five men on the Maine Central Institute squad found the net and at the halfway mark, Ricker led by only one point, 24-23. DiFrederico and Sonia pushed in ten points a piece in the last half to give Ricker its safe margin. DiFrederico was a high scorer with 19 points. Cooper was high for M. C. I. with 12 points.

Airport Gets EDA Grant – Approval of a $9,000 grant to study the feasibility of establishing an air industrial park to create jobs and stimulate long-range economic growth at Houlton has been announced by the Economic Development Administration, U.S. Department of Commerce. The Town of Houlton applied for the funds. Town officials state that an air industrial park at Houlton International Airport could create 200 new jobs for residents of the Southern Aroostook area. In addition to considering the financial aspects of developing the industrial park, the project will include identification of potential industries for the Houlton area. Town officials say the airpark study will serve as the basis for an action program to create new jobs through industrial growth. The project will include plans for buildings that could be adapted for new industry and a schedule for carrying out an industrial park development. The Town of Houlton will provide $3,290 to complete the $12,290 cost of the study.
Hodgdon Is Top Seeded In Junior High Tourney – Hodgdon Junior High, with a perfect 12-0 record, entered the 9th annual Island Falls Invitational Junior High basketball tournament as the top rated team as they played eighth-seeded Oakfield (1-12) last night. In the other opening round game scheduled last night, second seeded St. Mary’s of Houlton, with a 10-2 record, went against Benedicta, 1-8.
25 Years Ago – Feb. 25, 1998
Enlists In Air Force – Christopher M. Clement of Houlton, recently enlisted in the Air Force’s Delayed Enlistment Program. Clement, a 1998 graduate of Hodgdon High School, is scheduled to attend Air Force basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas, on June 18, 1998.
Air Force Assignment– Air Force Capt. Christopher M. Anderson has been assigned as wing scheduler/instructor navigator for the 97th Operations Support Squadron at Altus Air Force Base, Altus, Okla. He graduated in 1979 from Houlton High School, and received a bachelor’s degree in 1985 from the University of Maine, Farmington. He earned a master’s degree in 1996 from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
