A need for a California-style recall

To the editor:
I think it’s fairly clear, now, that there’s very little the U.S. can do to alleviate the horror of Iraq. The Sunnis and Shiites have developed a vicious cycle of revenge killing, ethnic cleansing, etc. that can only run its course. We’re only delaying it. Yes, we established democracy in Japan and Germany. But, it took about 10 years and those societies were very disciplined, orderly and wanted peace.     Al Qaeda loves having Americans there as easily accessible targets and Iraq is its best recruitment tool!
Mind you, I don’t want us totally out – and not precipitously. We caused that mess and are now responsible for defending their borders (from, say, Iran) until they can.
President Bush basically conned us into a needless war of aggression. He’s contravened the Constitution. His torture programs for terrorism suspects have tarnished our image, worldwide.
But, why don’t the Democrats force an end to the war? They have that mandate. All they have to do is insist on authorizing ONLY enough money to protect the borders, train Iraqis and fight Al Qaeda. No compromise; no money! No filibuster or veto could defeat that tactic.
If Bush insists on keeping the troops in the middle of that civil war, despite inadequate funds, he should be impeached before de-funding endangers the troops. But, we know that today’s crop of Democrats won’t stand up to the GOP. That’s why I call them the WAGOPs – the Wimps’ Auxiliary of the GOP.
Given the President’s record, I suggest that even our current Congress should recognize that the nation needs some way that the people can overcome political stalemate and remove a dangerous, federal-level politician from office. We need to add an Amendment to the Constitution that enables a California-style recall.
