WASHINGTON, D.C. — Loring Job Corps Honor Guard students recently were given the extreme honor to participate in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of The Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. The team traveled from Maine to Washington under the direction of staff members Roger Felix and Carl Smith who also served as commander of the local VFW and Legion service organizations. The events occurred over the weekend of Oct. 7-9 and while in the area they also visited the many veteran war memorials, the U.S Capital and the Air and Space Museum where the space shuttle is housed.
The students gained a strong understanding about our military and how a few have defended the many, especially as they walked through the Arlington cemetery and saw the cost of freedom first hand. This once in a lifetime experience was capped off with the group also being guests at the Association of the United States Army Convention where over 30,000 military leaders and defense contracting companies showcase the latest in military equipment, technology and firepower.
The Loring military prep group, also known as Honor Guard, consists of volunteer students from all trades and give up their own time to training on drill and ceremonies, customs and courtesies as well as leadership at every level. The group also continues to conduct community service and outreach support efforts for the center and are now preparing for their next objectives which consist of multiple community ceremonies to honor Veterans Day. This very busy group of future leader demonstrates what can and does happen when a people come together to make a positive difference in their surroundings
