April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month

AMHC Sexual Assault Services commemorates the start of Sexual Assault Awareness Month in April following the National Sexual Violence Resource Center theme “Together We Act, United We Change” campaign. This campaign highlights working together to address and prevent sexual assault, abuse and harassment in our communities. It focuses on enhancing public understanding of sexual violence, uplifting the voices of survivors, and empowering us all to work together.

Each year AMHC SAS supports roughly 300 survivors of sexual assault including adults and children in Aroostook, Hancock and Washington counties,” explains Julia Miller, program director of Prevention and Sexual Assault Services. “We provided prevention education to another 1,943 youth and young adults. The goal this month is to raise awareness and educate our communities on how to prevent sexual assault, abuse, and harassment.”

AMHC SAS highlights its work by encouraging individuals and communities to wear the color teal -the color of sexual violence prevention- on Tuesday’s during the month of April to show support for survivors. Advocates will also wear denim on April 30 to commemorate international Denim Day. To find out more about this day go to www.denimday.org.

AMHC SAS will also be taking part in the social media campaign “30 days of SAAM” on Facebook and Instagram. Please follow us to see the wonderful work we are doing in our communities. For more information about our programs and services please contact Wendy Page by email at wpage@amhc.org.
