HOULTON, Maine — The Houlton High School Alumni Association has announced the creation of the Houlton Student Opportunity Fund, a new initiative designed to ensure that every Houlton High School student can access essential educational and enrichment opportunities while still in school.
The Student Opportunity Fund will provide financial assistance for experiences that go beyond the traditional classroom but are vital to student growth — such as driver’s education, musical instrument purchases, field trips and other extracurricular activities. By reducing financial barriers, the fund aims to help students develop real-world skills, explore new interests and participate fully in school life.
Recognizing the importance of these opportunities, the Alumni Association’s board has already dedicated $10,000 in seed funding to launch the program. In addition, this year’s Giving Tuesday fundraiser will focus exclusively on growing the Student Opportunity Fund to meet the needs of more students. Community members, alumni and local businesses will be invited to contribute, ensuring the fund can continue to support students for years to come.
“High school is a time when experiences outside the classroom can be just as formative as those within it,” said Association President Nancy Ketch. “Our goal with the Student Opportunity Fund is simple: we don’t want any student to have to say no to an opportunity just because of cost.”
RSU 29 Superintendent Joe Fagnant praised the initiative, “The Student Opportunity Fund represents exactly the kind of community partnership that helps our students thrive. By removing financial barriers to driver’s ed, music, and school trips, we’re giving Houlton students the chance to build confidence, discover their talents, and prepare for life after graduation. We’re deeply grateful to the Alumni Association and everyone who will contribute to this effort.”
The Houlton Student Opportunity Fund represents a new chapter in the Alumni Association’s mission to support the town’s youth. By providing timely financial support, the fund will help students gain essential life skills, discover their talents and prepare for life after graduation.
