To the editor:
I’m a Democrat and I’ve always taken voting seriously — because it’s not just a right, it’s a responsibility. That’s why I support reforming Maine’s absentee ballot process. Adding ID requirements isn’t extreme; it’s common sense.
Every ballot, whether cast in person or by mail, should be tied to a real, eligible voter. Requiring photo ID when requesting an absentee ballot helps ensure each vote is legitimate and traceable. This protects the integrity of every vote cast.
The reform also makes smart updates to help clerks manage elections more securely. Shortening the absentee ballot deadline by two days gives officials more time to verify and process ballots properly, resulting in fewer errors and greater public confidence.
Limiting drop boxes to one per municipality and requiring bipartisan teams to retrieve ballots — just like with in-person voting — adds another layer of accountability and transparency.
With free IDs available and a challenged ballot option for those who need time to verify, this reform strikes the right balance between access and security.
Mainers value fairness, and this is a fair step forward. Let’s protect our elections: Please vote yes on Question 1 this November.
