Instructor Maren Moir from the Loring Job Corps Center has been awarded the prestigious Smart/Mahar Veterans of Foreign Wars High School (9-12 grade) Citizenship Education Teacher of the Year Award.

The award recognizes outstanding achievement and exceptional contributions in both academics and civic responsibility to every student in her classroom.

The Department of Maine Veterans of Foreign Wars presented the honor during its annual Voice of Democracy and Patriots Pen awards ceremony, held in January. The honor highlights Moir’s dedication to teaching not only the standard curriculum, but her unwavering commitment of instilling values, patriotism and citizenship into her everyday practice, VFW officials said.

“This award is a tremendous honor,” Moir said. “It reflects more than my hard work, it also reflects the commitment of all my students , and I am proud to accept this award  for my entire group’s efforts.”

The VFW Teacher of the Year Award is presented annually to a high school level teacher through a rigorous nominations process, and all recipients are selected based on innovation, leadership, community impact and instilling patriotism in the classroom.

This year’s selection committee praised Moir and the Loring Job Corps Center for providing the purpose, direction and motivation needed to train the next generation of young civic leaders.

With this recognition, Moir will now represent Maine at the national level while continuing to strengthen her reputation as a teacher who sets the example, remaining committed to every student’s continued pursuit of excellence.
