PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Aroostook Agency on Aging has received a transformative $500,000 gift to expand exercise programming for older adults across the region, with a focus on improving health, building confidence and strengthening social connection.
The investment will support the expansion of in-person programming in the Presque Isle area, along with virtual and hybrid options that will allow participants to join through local Access Points throughout Aroostook County.
Mary Barton Smith, a Presque Isle native now living in California, was inspired to give after seeing the difference made by the Agency’s wellness programs.
“I wanted to support something that helps people feel better – physically, socially and emotionally,” Smith said. “It was important to me that these programs be inclusive and accessible to people of all ability levels, especially those who may feel isolated, hesitant or unsure about getting started. And equally, I hoped it might encourage others who are in a position to support the good work of the Agency to find their own ways of doing so.”
“This is an extraordinary gift, both in its generosity and in its intention,” said Joy Barresi Saucier, executive director of the Aroostook Agency on Aging. “It allows us to think much more expansively about what’s needed – and what’s possible. We know that movement is about more than physical health. It’s about confidence, connection and quality of life. This investment will help us reach people who may not have seen themselves in traditional exercise programs and create opportunities that inspire physical activity and social engagement for our older neighbors.”
The gift will be administered through the Rodney Smith Fund of the Foundation for the Aroostook Agency on Aging, established in honor of his lifelong commitment to exercise as a cornerstone of healthy living. A successful Silicon Valley businessman and pioneer in the semiconductor industry, Smith was a dedicated philanthropist, guided by a belief in the importance of physical activity to overall well-being. Programs supported through the fund are welcoming and open to everyone, especially those who may face challenges like limited mobility, transportation issues, seasonal isolation or little experience with exercise. These programs will offer simple, safe and enjoyable ways to stay active, build strength and improve balance. By participating, individuals can feel better, stay healthier and maintain their independence.
Expanded offerings are now launching, including a highly anticipated chair yoga program, and will include a mix of in-person, virtual and hybrid opportunities. Funding will support program coordination, instructor training and compensation, licensing, equipment and materials and technology enhancements to improve access – particularly for those participating remotely.
The Agency will also work closely with community partners to ensure that programming is responsive, locally grounded and widely accessible.
“This gift creates real momentum,” Barresi Saucier said. “It allows us to build on what’s already working while thoughtfully expanding to reach more people in more ways. We are deeply grateful for the trust placed in us to use these funds in a way that reflects both community need and opportunity.”
The announcement also highlights the important role of private philanthropy in supporting innovative, community-based programming that responds to the evolving needs of older adults in Aroostook County. As new programs take shape, the Agency welcomes community members, partners, and instructors to be part of what comes next – whether by participating, sharing ideas or helping extend the reach of these offerings across Aroostook County.
