A Houlton Regional Hospital physician was placed on leave pending a death investigation, hospital officials said Friday.
“We can confirm that a deceased individual was brought into our emergency department by an off duty physician on Aug. 8,” Pam Sime, a hospital spokesperson, said. “Out of respect for patient privacy and in compliance with federal HIPAA privacy regulations, we cannot share any further details at this time.”
The hospital staff contacted police and officials are cooperating fully with local law enforcement and the medical examiner’s office, she said.
“The hospital is conducting a thorough investigation, and the physician was placed on administrative leave pending the hospital’s further review of this matter,” Sime said.
Houlton Police Capt. Jasmine Cyr confirmed Friday that police responded to an Aug. 8 incident at the hospital and said the department is conducting a death investigation.
Police are waiting for results from the medical examiner, Cyr said.
