A Sunday evening fire inside a home in Fort Kent displaced six people.
The Fort Kent Fire and Rescue Department responded to a structure fire just after 5:30 p.m. on Boucher Circle with smoke coming from the vents and eaves of a home.
Crews discovered the fire was contained to the attic, putting it out after an “aggressive interior attack,” the department said. Twenty-six firefighters from Fort Kent and Eagle Lake responded, remaining on scene for just under two hours to make sure the fire was out.
All occupants were out of the home by the time firefighters arrived, the department said. The Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents.
The fire temporarily forced the closure of Highland Avenue, a major residential road off Fort Kent’s Main Street.
The department did not release what caused the fire. State fire marshal’s office investigators will be on scene Monday morning, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said.
