SACAP artists give back to community through calendars

Last year many people were lucky enough to purchase a Bicentennial calendar featuring the paintings of Esther Faulkner showing Houlton buildings. The calendar was used as a successful fundraiser for Aroostook Historical and Art Museum. On Saturday, Oct. 27, artists unveiled new calendars at a signing event sponsored by York’s Bookstore. The artists from Southern Aroostook Cultural Arts Project (SACAP) included Bob Ellis and Bruce Glick. Their work has been donated to support some favorite local nonprofits. All three had fun signing at the bookstore.

SIGNING — Esther Faulkner gets Bob Ellis to sign a Health Services Foundation fundraising calendar for her, on Oct. 29 at York’s Bookstore. Below: Sample page from SACAP calendar “Working the Soil.”

Image In collaboration, Glick and York decided to make two calendars — one that featured just Houlton-area photographs and another that would have broader appeal throughout the County. Working the Soil, Images of Aroostook Farms and Gardens is filled with famous quotes about farming and gardening, as well as information from farmer’s almanacs. It highlights the beauty of Aroostook’s fields and farms with photographs that inspire connection with the land. It features photographs by Susan Glick, Bruce Glick and Susan York.  Ms. York was also the designer for this calendar.
For years, Susan York had talked to Bruce Glick about the idea of creating a calendar featuring Bruce’s photographs of downtown Houlton.
“When Bruce generously offered the use of his photographs for a SACAP fundraiser, I immediately volunteered my design services to create the calendars,” said York. “It was a fun design project to make something unique that I would want to buy myself.”
Image     It was through this process that Houlton’s Hidden Treasures, a 14-month Bicentennial Calendar was born. The calendar highlights the beauty of Houlton’s historic architectural details, combines this photography with transparent images of the full buildings, adds in date insets   and provides background information on this beautiful community.
“Aroostook Printshop did a great job with the printing,” said Audrey Zimmerman, SACAP’s executive director. “The calendars look like something you’d buy from any high-end bookstore.”
Bruce and Susan had so much fun signing calendars that they have agreed to do it again on Friday Nov. 23 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Houlton craft bazaar at the Gentle Memorial Building. In the meantime, the SACAP 14-month calendars sell for $12 plus tax and are available at the following merchants: Visions at 66 Main St., Lisa’s Hair Designs, Aroostook Milling, Five Element Healing Arts Center and the local Chamber of Commerce as well as Rainbarrow Studio in Littleton and Morning Star Framing in Presque Isle.  They will soon be available on SACAP’s website www.sacap.us which is undergoing renovations.
The Health Services Foundation calendars featuring Bob Ellis’s work are available for $10/each at Houlton Regional Hospital gift shop, the Chamber of Commerce, Dr. Ellis’s office, and the foundation office.
To see more offerings by any of the above-mentioned artists, and many artists from the region, stop in to SACAP’s volunteer run storefront, Visions at 66 Main St., Tuesday-Thursday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Fridays from 12-5 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
