WHAT IS ART? — That’s what 16 students from Houlton Higher Education Center were trying to define when they took a field trip to the yard of Jerry Cardone on Military Street in Houlton. The students prepared for their trip by brainstorming in class about what art was. Jerry Cardone expresses himself with what he calls “pop art”. Not everyone sees it that way. One student was overheard asking him how he feels when he learns that some people don’t like his display. The instructor, Ann Kittridge, from Woodstock, N.B. shared that the students would be writing a paper from their experience. They will decide for themselves “Is this art?” “How does art and politics relate?” What art is to you might not necessarily be art to your neighbor. Mr. Cardone is an active artist and his display is forever changing and being added to. His work has been featured in several college art shows, although he does not always attend the event. His art has also been shown on a variety of television human-interest stories.
