Stamp Out Hunger May 9

    HOULTON —Local letter carriers will join U.S. postal workers nationwide this Saturday, May 9, to help stamp out hunger by collecting non-perishable food items for the three local community food pantries.
    Postmaster Fred Workman said he is “encouraging all residents to participate even in these trying times. It’s one way we can all make a difference. It doesn’t take a lot to put a few non-perishable items by the mailbox. But, it can make a difference in somebody’s life at this time.”
    Letter carriers will pick up food left near mailboxes and take them back to the loading dock in Houlton where volunteers will sort and equally divide the items for the food pantries at the Salvation Army, the Wesleyan Church and St. Mary’s of the Visitation.
    An estimated 35 million people are at risk of hunger in America, including 12 million children. Since 1993, the Postal Service and its letter carriers have partnered on this campaign to stamp out hunger.  It has grown to become the world’s largest, single-day food drive, collecting more than three-quarters of a billion pounds of food since its inception.
