Houlton Little League officially opened last Saturday, with Opening Ceremonies.
Gary Dwyer of Houlton , left, threw out the first pitch to kick off the season.
Dwyer, a well-known businessman in Houlton, graduated from Ricker Classical Institute in 1956.
During his freshman year of high school, he pitched and disputably beat the best Houlton baseball team ever fielded.
In his junior year of high school, he was scouted by the Red Sox and Dodgers.
His high school team made it to a few Eastern Maine championship games, but they couldn't move on with only one pitcher.
Dwyer pitched against the likes of Roger Clap from the Pirates organization, whom he beat 2-1.
But, the toughest batter he ever faced was also from Houlton, Woody Dunphy. When Woody connected pitchers never even turned around, just simply looked for another ball from the umpire.
Dwyer is also a veteran, serving in the U.S. Army, stationed in Korea. Later he was asked to re-enlist so that he could play with in Army All- Star Team. Before the first pitch, Little League baseball and softball players were introduced, as well as players participating in the Houlton Recreation Department T-ball and First Pitch programs. A full day of baseball and softball games were played at Community Park. County Yankee supplied the food sold during the day, and Tim Humphrey was master of ceremonies.
