Dead River strengthens guidelines

In recognition that it is a privilege to buy and sell alcoholic beverages in the state of Maine, Bradley’s Citgo of Presque Isle and Boondocks Restaurant of Fort Fairfield, have adopted Alcohol Sales Policies while Dead River convenience stores located in Caribou, Presque Isle, Houlton and Millinocket have strengthened theirs.
“By adopting and adhering to best practice policies surrounding the sale of alcohol, licensees are demonstrating their commitment to the safe and responsible sale of all alcoholic beverages to only those patrons who are 21 years of age and refuse the sale of alcoholic beverages to those individuals that are visibly intoxicated,” said Michelle Plourde Chasse of Community Voices.
Although overall underage drinking has declined in recent years, reducing underage access to alcohol remains as important as ever. “Youth obtain alcohol from a variety of sources, retailers being one of them. By adopting and adhering to best practice policies, stores can reinforce to their employees that their establishment will not participate in the illegal sale of alcohol,” Plourde Chasse said.
Best practices surrounding the sale of alcohol include voluntary measures, as well as ensuring all possible compliance with Maine law as written under Title 28-A, Liquor Law. Among the Title 28 laws, clerks are required to card anyone who appears to be under the age of 27, post notifications of Maine liquor law, and refuse the sale to visibly intoxicated persons.
“These establishments have gone above and beyond by including the carding of individuals appearing to be older than 27, enrollment of employees in Responsible Beverage Service trainings, monitor of exits and entrances for minors and intoxicated persons, documentation of incidents, and participation in voluntary compliance checks into their respective policies,” said Plourde Chasse.
“These three businesses are exemplary of social responsibility. Their voluntary compliance to protect the health, safety, and well-being of their patrons, their employees, and the communities they serve is commendable and Healthy Maine Partners congratulates these businesses,” Plourde Chasse added.
