    East Hodgdon — The ladies of the Union Church held an ice cream sale on Mr. Edward Henderson’s lawn last Thursday evening. They netted the sum of $20.
    Visitors — Mrs. Edward Henderson and little Viola Eagers have returned home from Ludlow. While there they were guests of Mrs. Henderson’s daughter, Mrs. Robbie Stephenson.
    Nickerson Lake — Miss Emma Pearce, Miss Margaret Burnham, Miss Anna Putnam, Miss Edith Koon, Miss Claire Brown, Miss Evelyn Pearce and Misses Alma and Geraldine Pierce of Laredo, Texas, with Mrs. T.V. Doherty as a chaperone are spending a week at the Pierce cottage.
    Littleton — Quite an exciting game of ball took place at Haggerty grounds between Littleton and Tough End, 16 to 6 in favor of Littleton.

    Storm damage — Two barns on the Harold McCain farm in Ludlow were burned to the ground after being struck by lightning. Potato and grain fields were also flattened and seriously damaged.
    Appalachian Trail — Now that Maine has completed a 120-mile section of the great Appalachian Trail and expects soon to finish 50 miles more, vigorous hikers in a few months will be able to walk from Mount Oglethorpe, Ga. to Mount Katahdin, a distance of 2,005 miles.
    Shipments — C.G. Hamilton, the popular agent at the B&A station reports that there were shipped this season 977 carloads of potatoes from Monticello which were 212 carloads more than last year.
    

    Houlton’s budget — Houlton taxpayers will be paying $57 per thousand in property taxes this year, an increase of $9 over 1959 when the rate was $48.
    Top farmers — Ralph R. Rush of Benedicta and Henry McBride of Littleton were named best farmers in a national conservation program. They will be guests of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. in Litchfield Park, Ariz. who sponsored the program.
    Temperature — The thermometer in Market Square rose to 93 degrees according to the FAA office at the airport and 90 degrees the day after with a low of 63.
    Reunion — The 1949 class of Houlton High School held their 10th reunion at Houlton Community Golf Course. Charles Johnston, presided at the reunion and Mrs. Lawrence Lovely offered the prayer before dinner was served.
    Name change — Clark’s Hotel was changed to the Willis Hotel by the owner, Willis O. Grimm. Clark’s Hotel has long been a landmark in Houlton having been established in 1878 and known as Clark’s until it was changed to the Adam’s House. In 1946 when the present owner purchased the business the name was changed back to Clark’s.

    I-95 — The final leg of the interstate will be completed by the spring of 1985. This section of I-95 will provide access to the new $2 million federal structure in progress adjacent to the newly completed Canadian Immigration & Customs building at the local port of entry.
    Swim program — Approximately 75 students ranging from three years to adults are currently participating in the instructional swim program offered by the Northeast District YMCA held at Nickerson Lake. The instructors for the program are Terry Adams of Houlton and Paul Kornhaber of New York.
    Historical item —The Aroostook Historical and Art Museum’s dilemma of a suitable local display area for the old French’s Drug Store interior still exists. Due to storage costs and availability, unless some club, business or group offers an alternative, this unique interior of fine woodcarvings and stained glass sections will probably find a home in another locality.

BORDER LITTLE LEAGUE — Ken Bither hosted the Border Little League players from Linneus at Bither’s Country Inn for their summer banquet. Trophies were awarded to all players. The team finished the season with a 10-2 record. Attending were from left, first row, Sonja Williams, Ray Blake, Matthew Nightingale, Joey Cain and Debbie Kiewra; second row, Mike Cain, Jimmy Doane, Tony Jay, Averille Lovely and Jason Blake; third row, Coach Wayne Dwyer, Brent Carpenter, P.J. Cain, James Frost and Lyn Frost. Absent were Scott McGary, Andy Kirk and Tracy Mitchell.
