Senior Citizens’ healthy cooking

The Houlton Recreation Department will be offering Senior Citizen Healthy Cooking classes with University of Maine Cooperative Extension Service.  Classes will be held each Thursday from noon-1 p.m. at the Houlton Recreation Center.
This four-week program will feature a different recipe each week as well as information on cooking for one or two people, how to keep food safe, how to make sense of food labels and tips for stretching food dollars.
Classes will begin on Thursday, April 12.  Class space is limited to 12 participants.  Cost for this program is $8 per person. To register, call the recreation department at 532-1310 by April 6.

April vacation activities for children

Registrations are now being accepted for the following April vacation activities to be held at the Houlton Recreation Department.
Red Cross Babysitters Training will be held on Tuesday, April 17 from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the rec center. Youth must be between the ages of 11-15 years. Cost for this class is $45 and is limited to 12 youth.
This is a great opportunity for youth to get the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to care for infants and children while earning extra spending money. To register, call the department at 532-1310 by April 9.
Healthy Cooking for Kids will be held on Thursday, April 19  from 9:30-11 a.m. at the rec center.  Youth in grades 1-4 are invited to sign up for this program. Cost is $5 per youth and is limited to 12 youth.
Children will prepare a healthy recipe and learn the importance of healthy cooking. This program is co-sponsored with the University of Maine Cooperative Extension Service. To register, call the department at 532-1310 by April 9.
Sneakin’ In Science program will be held on Saturday, April 21 from 9:30-11a.m. at the rec center. Youth between the ages of 7-13 years can sign up.
The theme for this morning is “Future Engineers.”  Instructor Sara McQuarrie will see if participants have what it takes to build the fastest and most creative marble obstacle course, as well as building car ramps and boats that float on air!
To register, call 532-1310 by April 9. Cost for this program is $12 per child and the class is limited to 15 children.
Open gym and game room hours during vacation will be as follows: Saturday, April 14 through Sunday, April 22 from 1-4 p.m.  Youth in grades 2-12 are allowed at the rec center during these hours.  Younger children must be accompanied an adult.
