Houlton’s KFC restaurant abruptly closed its doors Sept. 30. A sign posted on the window to the restaurant stated, “To our loyal customers, we regret to inform you that this location will be permanently closed. After nearly 30 years in Houlton, we will miss you greatly and wish you all the best.” All of the promotional items that hung in the windows have been removed, as have many of the items inside. Restaurant owner Derik Smith, who also owns the Presque Isle KFC, did not return phone calls from the Houlton Pioneer Times seeking comment on why the establishment closed.
