Rines among top runners in County Challenge

    The Aug. 10 County Open Half Marathon race completed the sixth of seven County Challenge Road Race Series races for 2013.
    With one remaining race, the age group and overall division leaders have been established with Kimberley Wright of Mapleton leading the women’s division with 39 points, followed by Gabrielle Cyr-Wheeler of Presque Isle (31),and Rene Gorneault of Caribou (20).

    The men’s division has P.J. Gorneault of Caribou leading with 44 points, followed by Chris Rines of Houlton (32) and Spencer McElwain of Caribou (29).

    Age group leaders in the women’s division include: 14 and under: Sarah Beaulieu (22) and Jessica Boucher (18); 15-18: Franki White, Isahel Gerencer, Maura Freme and Alexis Coiley tied for first place with 11 points; 19-29: Cyr-Wheeler (31), Stephanie Graves (19) and Katherine Nickerson (15); 30-39: R. Gorneault (28), Kellie Miller (25) and Nicole Hanscom (22); 40-49: Angela Ewings (33) and  Ellen Bemis (25); 50-59: Wright (53) and Brenda Bailey (18); 60-69: Connie McLellan and Lynn Soucy tied for first place with 11; and 70-and-older: Darlene Higgins (11).
    On the men’s side, age group leaders are 14 and under: John O’Meara (20) and Dustin Alward (18); 15-18: Tyler Strid (35), Lucas Kinney (31) and Trevor Levesque (23); 19-29: Rines (45), McElwain (33)  and Curtis Wheeler (28); 30-39: P.J. Gorneault (44), Thomas Beckum (38) and Evan Graves (27); 40-49: Jeff Ashby (64), Robert Losieniecki (32) and Jeff Irving and Craig Dubay tied for third place (24); 50-59: Leo Kashian (53), Brent Bailey (32) and Carl Soderberg (25); 60-69: Brent Jepson (20), with David Hall and Nick Pesut tied for second place (17); 70-and-older:  Clint Cushman and Art Thompson tied for first place (11).
    The remaining series race is the Caribou Labor Day Road Race on Sept. 2. The 5K walk begins at 10:30 a.m. and the 8K run begins at 11 a.m. Race registration starts at 8:30 a.m. at Caribou High School. Contact Chris Smith (764-4816) for further information.
    The season finishes up with 31st annual Aroostook Mûsterds Awards being presented in late October with the date, location and time to be announced.  
    The series is sponsored by the Aroostook Mûsterds Running Club, a family organization which encourages the development of health, fitness and healthy competition through the sport of running. Each year the club awards a $500 scholarship to a student entering college who plans to continue running for general fitness or who plans to run competitively at his/her chosen institution.
    Funds are raised from membership dues and advertisements sold for inclusion in the annual Mûsterds “Aroostook Road Racing Calendar.”
