Compassionate Friends candle lighting set for Sunday

For the fifth time in as many years, the Houlton chapter of The Compassionate Friends (TCF) is leading a gathering at the Cary Library to honor the memory of children who have died, but will never be forgotten. Grandparents, siblings, relatives and friends of these children are invited to attend this special event and hold high their remembrance candle to honor the memory of their loved one.

The chapter is part of the worldwide organization, which is the largest self help bereavement group for families that have suffered the tragic loss of a child. TCF has more than 700 chapters in the United States, with sister organizations in at least 35 countries around the globe.
“By gathering at exactly 7 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8 to light our candle, we bring together parents and relatives of those who have died too soon and we tie into the global candle lighting at the same time,” said Jennifer Sylvester. The Sylvesters selected a tree from their property and gave it in memory of their son Sam. It was planted with the aid of Nickerson Construction and the Town of Houlton.
“All are invited to bring a photo of their loved one, which will then be laminated and hung on the decorated tree during the short 20-minute ceremony held outside. It is a tangible and very meaningful way to declare one’s loss and also one’s love for their child reminding all that the pain never goes away and the memory never fades. Come as early as 6:30 p.m. to have your photo laminated and meet one another.  Following the candle lighting there are refreshments inside the library courtesy of Tim Hortons. And dress warmly!,” said Sylvester.
The Houlton chapter of TCF meets the second Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the conference center at the hospital. All are welcome. It is good to share stories of loved ones lost.
