SMYRNA, Maine — Failure to stop at a traffic sign resulted in a two-vehicle collision on Route 2 in Smyrna Thursday afternoon.
According to Trooper Chuck Michaud of the Maine State Police, Allen Whitney, 81, of Island Falls was traveling north on the Oakfield-Smyrna Road in Smyrna nearing the intersection of U.S. Routes 2 and 212 in a 2003 Chevrolet Impala when he failed to stop at a stop sign.
Whitney collided with Philip Shields, 60, of Dyer Brook who was traveling west on Route 2 in a 2010 Dodge Ram. Shields had the right of way and was attempting to make a left-hand turn when Whitney struck Shields along the drivers side of his pickup truck shortly after 2 p.m. The force of the impact almost caused Shields’ truck to overturn, Michaud said.
Whitney was transported to Houlton Regional Hospital as a precaution due to chest pains. Shields refused medical treatment. Both vehicles were towed from the scene. Both drivers were wearing their seatbelts, Michaud said.
Trooper John Darcy investigated the incident. Houlton Ambulance, Oakfield Fire Department, the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office and the Department of Transportation assisted Darcy at the scene.
