Women’s volleyball team wins Sunrise championship

    STANDISH – The University of Maine at Presque Isle women’s volleyball team defeated the Bengals of UM-Fort Kent, 3-1, in the championship match of the 2009 Sunrise Conference Tournament Saturday.     UMFK earned the earlier win in the semi-final against UM-Machias. The Owls, who finished first in the conference over the regular season, had a bye in the first round of the tournament. 
    With the win, the Lady Owls close out their successful season at 18-4, as they repeat as conference champions.

Soccer team fall in semifinal round

    SCARBOROUGH – The UMaine Presque Isle men’s soccer team played arguably one of its best games of the season, keeping the undefeated Bengals of UMFK scoreless through the first half of the Sunrise Conference semifinal match-up on Friday afternoon. 
    After a scoreless first 45 minutes of regulation, UMFK’s Dwayne Smith scored off a Spencer Jacoby assist just 2:15 into the second half to lead top-seeded University of Maine at Fort Kent to victory over No. 4 Owls. 
    Jermaine West scored five minutes later to  make the final score 2-0 in favor of the 16-0-1 Bengals.  Smith had the assist. UMPI goalie Richard Felbaum (Saco) turned away seven shots for the 11-5-2 Owls, while UMFK goalies David Girouard and Giovanni Sinclair combined for one save on four shots.
    On the women’s side, forward Angie Waryasz scored an unassisted goal 26:52 into the first half as No. 3 State University of New York at Canton upset second-seeded University of Maine at Presque Isle in the Sunrise Conference semifinals. 
    Kirsten Morley scored two second-half goals for the 10-8 Roos. Cristina Butler had both assists. UMPI goalie Taylor Ussery made four saves on eight shots for the 10-6 Owls, while Canton keeper Aubrey Parrish turned away four of 11 shots.

Owl basketball teams in tourneys this weekend

    The University of Maine at Presque Isle men’s and women’s basketball teams will get their seasons under way in tournaments held Friday and Saturday.
    The Owl women are in Farmington for the UMF Tournament and will play the host Beavers in the opening round at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The Owls will play in either the consolation or championship game Saturday at 1 or 3 p.m.
    The UMPI men make the trip to Henniker, N.H. for the New England College Tournament. UMPI will take on the hosts at 7 p.m. Friday and then will match up against Suffolk University at 1 p.m. Saturday.
    The UMPI women are coached by Tracy Guerrette, and the men’s team is coached by Terry Cummings.
