Washburn District High School honors fall athletes at ceremony

WASHBURN — Fall athletic awards were handed out at Washburn District High School on Tuesday, Nov. 15.

Athletic Director Ron Ericson welcomed everyone to the event during his opening remarks before turning the event over to the coaches.

Girls’ varsity soccer coach Marci Barbarula and assistant coach Scott Olson presented letters to manager Marienna Bragg, and players Tyra Shaw, Lucia Bragg and Caitlyn Coulomb. Pins were awarded to Kelsey Churchill, Tia Dee, Kristi Sperrey, Marlaina Spooner, Olivia Doody, Maegan Fitzpatrick, Rayah Saucier, Taylor Blackstone-Thompson, Carmen Bragg, Kennedy Churchill, Carsyn Koch, Nicole Olson, Caitlyn Roix, Mikayla Churchill, Joan Overman, MacKenzie Worcester and scorekeeper Kyle McLaughlin. Earning three year plaques were Tia Dee, Marlaina Spooner and Rayah Saucier. The coach’s award went to Kelsey Churchill. Kristi Sperrey was named the Most Improved player. MacKenzie Worcester was the Rookie of the Year. Carmen Bragg was named Most Valuable Player. Rayah Saucier, Carmen Bragg, Carsyn Koch and Mackenzie Worcester were named All-Aroostook and All-Eastern Maine. MacKenzie Worcester received a plaque recognizing her for establishing a new single season goal scoring mark of 27 goals in her freshman season.

Boys’ varsity soccer coach Ben Goodwin presented a certificate to manager Kyle McLaughlin. Earning letters were Taylor Skinner, Cameron Preston, Alex Pelletier, Kenneth Irving, Cameron Bragg and Noah Farley. Receiving pins were manager Owen James, and players Michael Ericson, Andrew McLaughlin, Mitchell Worcester, Justin Farley, Nick Bragg, Anthony Viola, Mason turner, Jacob Reed, Ethan Pendexter, Jordan McLaughlin, Zach Davis and Chase Chandler. Receiving 3-year plaques were Justin Farley, Mitchell Worcester, Nick Bragg and Ethan Pendexter. Named Co-MVP’s were Jordan McLaughlin and Anthony Viola. Nick Bragg received the Coach’s Award. Zach Davis was recognized for being the Most Improved Player. Mitchell Worcester, Jordan McLaughlin, and Nick Bragg received All-Aroostook certificates. Nick Bragg and Jordan McLaughlin were named All-Eastern Maine. Mitchell Worcester received a plaque for setting a new school single season assist record with 19, breaking his own record that he set the season before. Jordan McLaughlin was recognized for setting a new school career goal scoring mark with 84. He broke a record held previously by Isaac Carney.

Larry Worcester of the Northern Maine Board of Soccer Officials and Athletic Director Ron Ericson presented the Butch Shaw Awards to MacKenzie Worcester and Jordan McLaughlin.

Cross Country coach Mike Waugh and assistant coach Sean Diette presented certificates to Marlaina Spooner, Rueben Roman, Justin Farley, and Cameron Preston. Earning letters were Michael Ericson, MacKenzie Worcester, Joan Overman, Marianne Helton, Mikayla Churchill and Hannah Heald. Receiving pins were  Caitlyn Roix, Taylor Blackstone-Thompson, Nicole Olson, Carmen Bragg, Carsyn Koch, Taylor Blackstone-Thompson Nick Bragg, Kyle McLaughlin, Ethan Pendexter, Chandler Dobson and Anthony Viola. The Boys’ most Improved Runner award went to Michael Ericson and the girls’ Most Improved Runner award was Hannah Heald. The Most Valuable Girls’ runner was Carsyn Koch and the Most Valuable Boys’ runner was Nick Bragg. The Cross Country Coach’s Award went to Carmen Bragg. Michael Ericson, Nick Bragg, Carsyn Koch, Carmen Bragg, MacKenzie Worcester, Joan Overman, Marinne Helton, Mikayla Churchill and Hannah Heald received certificates for being All-Aroostook.

Earning a varsity jacket for participation after the fall season were Kelsey Churchill, Nick Bragg, Chase Chandler, Mason Turner, Jordan McLaughlin, Anthony Viola, Jacob Reed and Zach Davis.
