• The scholars of the Grammar School gave their teacher, Mrs. C. B. Margesson, an enjoyable picnic at Madawaska Lake Tuesday.
• The frame for the new school house on the high school lot is up and boarded in.
100 Years Ago-July 23, 1914
• Masonic lodge for Limestone — In November, 1913, 12 Master Masons made application to the Grand Lodge for a dispensation to work the Masonic Degrees in Limestone, under the name of Limestone Lodge. We have not yet received our charter, although the same was granted at last session of the Grand Lodge in May.
• Washburn business news — Mr. Arthur A. Green has bought the Henry Curran drug store and is to move it across the street to a lot adjoining his residence. Mr. John Hart, who has conducting a livery business the past year, has sold out to Stillman White. Mr. E. B. Sperry, who has been doing a trucking business here the past two years, has sold out his interests to Ross Churchill.

• Potato starch to plastics — Over 500 Aroostook farmers and citizens gathered in Presque Isle Monday evening to hear of the progress being made in the new movement to establish the manufacturing of plastic products made from the conversion of potatoes to starch and cellulose. By unanimous vote, $5,000 for the purpose of constructing of model machinery was approved.
• Business district fire — Fire resulting in damages from $800 to $1,000 occurred in the building owned by Mrs. Thomas Bouchard on Water Street Tuesday afternoon. The restaurant of Leo Currier and the barbershop of Joseph Beaulieu received fire and water damage. The origin of the fire was undetermined.
50 Years Ago-July 23, 1964
• Kiwanis Camp hosts 100 boys — Half of the 100 boys who will enjoy a week of camping and good food at the Kiwanis Club’s Kamp Karawanee at Mud Lake will embark for the popular site this Sunday. The camp has been a Kiwanis Club project in Caribou for several years and has become the main project of the club.
• At the movies — This week at the Polaris Drive-in Theatre: “Lassie’s Great Adventure” and “Come Blow Your Horn” starring Frank Sinatra; The Caribou Theatre features “Good Neighbor Sam” starring Jack Lemmon and the Powers Theatre offers “The Bridge Over the River Kwai” with William Holden and Alec Guinness.
25 Years Ago-July 26, 1989
• ‘Roostoook River Race results — The sound of the firing of a Civil War cannon marked the beginning of the popular ‘Roostook River Raft Race Sunday, July 16 from its launch site on the Fort Fairfield Road. County Optical of Caribou, led by Bill Belanger, was the race winner, followed closely for the second place award by the “floating birthday cake” raft of S. W. Collins and Tibbetts TV and Appliance. Gould and Smith placed third.
