Presque Isle and Washburn – Charles Herbert “Herb” Jardine, 99, died Sept. 25, 2009, at a Presque Isle health care facility. He was born September 12, 1910, in Washburn, the son of Charles Henry and Margaret (Mooers) Jardine.
Herb was a graduate of Washburn High School and attended Beals Business School. He farmed for many years on the Jardine Brothers Farm in Washburn with his brother Jasper. He was well known for his sense of humor, his dry wit and his story telling.
He was a lifetime member of the Lidstone Memorial United Methodist Church of Washburn and the Salmon Brook Historical Society. He held the Boston Post Cane for being the oldest person in Washburn. He and Lois, his wife of 64 years, loved to travel after their retirements.
He is survived by his son, Charles and his wife Lorraine Jardine of Orrington, Maine and his daughter, Leah and her husband Joe Tafolla of Schertz, Texas; four grandchildren, Lori Tafolla, Mark Tafolla, Charles Jardine and Michelle Jardine and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Lois Abbie Staples Jardine; three brothers, William, Herman and Jasper; and four sisters, Eldora Jardine, Verna Sloat, Anne Grant and Autice Jardine. He had a very special caretaker, Laurie Fisher, who brought him much love and care.
A graveside service was conducted at the Crouseville Cemetery 2 p.m., Monday, Sept. 28, 2009, with Rev. Dorothy Matson of the Lidstone Memorial United Methodist Church officiating.
