The Loring Commerce Centre was one of 21 sites chosen in 1994 by the Department of Defense to locate consolidated finance and accounting offices that once resided on military installations.
While the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) also has sites in Indianapolis, Ind.: Columbus, Ohio; Rome, N.Y.: Arlington, Va.: Texarkana, Texas; Germany and Japan, the potential of alleviating economic loss due to a base closure and a realignment decision played into solidifying the DFAS location at Loring.
Since the institution’s inception in January of 1995, DFAS Loring has continuously provided appropriated funds accounting and reporting, working capital funds accounting and reporting, accounts payable and receivable to the Air Force, Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard.
There are currently 576 employees at DFAS Loring, who live primarily in Limestone, Fort Fairfield and Caribou. There are, however, a percentage of individuals commuting from as far north as Fort Kent and as far south as Mars Hill.
Officials at DFAS Loring look forward to providing continued finance and accounting services to their customers at the same consistently outstanding levels DFAS employees have been producing since 1995.
DFAS Loring was the first tenant for the Centre and their tenure at the site has been marked with a close partnership with the Loring Development Authority.
Officials at DFAS Loring have found the Aroostook County workforce to be exceptionally hard working and innovative, and found that their employees bring a strong sense of commitment to duty and public service that arise from not only the legacy of the former Loring Air Force Base, but also the fact that historically, Maine’s citizens have led the nation in military service.
Their employees reflect the tremendous assets of the local area, combining the strengths of close-knit families, vibrant rural communities and exceptional opportunities in educational, professional, and personal development.
DFAS officials feel that it has truly been a pleasure to be a part of the historic development that took place from the closing of the Loring Air Force Base, and they continue looking forward to continuing to make a difference at the Centre.
