Scout adventure
On Saturday, Sept. 19, several members of Washburn Boy Scout Troop 177 joined the Oscar Dow Post 48 of the American Legion in visiting the World War II crash site in Perham.
The Scouts and Legion members were transported by a group of Washburn-area Jeep enthusiasts to the site of the crash Sept. 22. The B-25 C bomber was en route from Presque Isle Army Air Force base to Europe, and all seven crew members were killed in the crash.
This was the 62nd anniversary of the crash and is the second year that Scouts and leaders performed a ceremony at the monument cross to the deceased, placing flags for each as the roll call was read by Scout Curtis Thompson.
A brief description of the incident was read by Scoutmaster Larry Harrison and a prayer was conducted by Scout Drew White. Following the flag placement, “Taps” was played by Scout Taylor Skinner on the bugle. Eight Jeeps, along with a pickup, were provided by local Jeep owners to transport the group to the site through dense brush and woods, leaving only a short hike to the crash site.
Those attending included: Scouts Curtis Thompson, Kody Brissette, Taylor Skinner, Daniel Roy, Tyler Farley, Drew White, Scoutmaster Larry Harrison and committee member Mike Thompson. Legion members attending included: Commander Kermit Fuller, Stanley Theriault, Dale Whitten, Jasper “Bud” Umphrey, Willie Drost and Bill Flewelling. Jeep owners assisting in the event included: Derek Libby, Willie Drost, Andy White, Kermit Fuller, Max Curtis, Dave Savoy, Russell Scott, Matt White, Aaron Campbell and Bill Pike.
