99 Years Ago – December 3, 1925
Interesting historic relic — An old birch bark canoe believed to have been made by the Indians over forty years prior and was one of the oldest, if not the only one in the state, had been found in Waldoboro and steps were being taken to have it bought by the state and preserved at the State Capitol at Augusta.

Oldest Resident Honored — Mrs. Mary Sullivan is presented the Boston Post gold headed cane by Town Council Chairman Robert Anderson. The cane has been in Houlton for many years and is awarded to the oldest citizen.

Timberland in Eastern Maine 5 cents an acre — ‘Going—Going—Gone! This tract of timberland in eastern Maine was sold for five cents an acre. It had been fifty years, on October 28, 1875, that more than 12,657 acres of state lands were sold at auction at City Hall, Bangor, with the firm of Pearl & Webb conducting the sale

A special bonus given — The board of directors of the J.C. Penney Company has authorized a special payment of an amount equal to two weeks’ pay for all full-time associates who have been employed for the full year of 1949 and on a proportionate basis for extra and part-time associates and for those employed less than a year.

50 Years Ago – November 27, 1974
Area Is Hit By Raging Snowstorm — A blistering Northeaster, which at 1 p.m. Tuesday had dropped 15.3 inches of snow on Houlton in a little more than 12 hours, and continued to rage Tuesday night with as much as 25 inches of new snow expected before the storm was due to taper off in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
