When you are adopting a pet, take the time to meet the scared ones, the shy ones, the ones that don’t stick out to you. Take the time to see the ones that hide under their bed, blanket or litter pan … the ones that hiss, the ones that bark, the ones that cower, shake and cry and look at you with confusion.
Dogs have incredible senses; they can hear any little noise and can smell from a mile away. People talk about opening a wrapper on a piece of cheese; you can’t hear a thing when you open it, but your furry pal sure can and comes running.
It is so important for young children to learn about being kind, having empathy and showing compassion for our four-legged friends. It starts at home and it should start at a very early age. Loving and carry for pets is a commitment for the life of the pet, not for a few weeks or months until the novelty of a new pet wears off.
A few weeks ago, we received a phone call from a lady who had just trapped a kitten. When we arrived to get it we noticed that she had an injury to her hind end and to make matters worse she had maggots eating away at her flesh. The kitten was also feral.
Right about now all the Central Aroostook Humane Society board members would be soliciting sponsors, auction items, gathering merchandise, making calls, sending letters and preparing for our biggest fundraiser of the year: the Toast to the Animals.
A local cat rescue organization will continue its mission to provide feline spay or neuter surgery and meet the needs of pet owners in Aroostook County, thanks to $52,000 in grant funding.
Calling all tuxedo cat lovers: Dixie is your chick. This endearing and gorgeous cat has “thumbs” and long whiskers.
I have a sister who lives downstate and gets free issues of Downeast Dog News. It is a great little newspaper that comes out periodically.
This week, Luther lost his battle with cancer. Luther was a beautiful black cat who was feral. The Ark was his home for nine years. Luther came to us from a feral cat colony here in town. His shelter was an old abandoned school bus and his food source was whatever he could find.
