The Houlton Humane Society has received a $120,000 grant from the Elmira B. Sewell Foundation to help defray the costs associated with spay/ neuter clinics offered to pet owners in southern Aroostook County.
What a nice summer we have had so far. Hopefully the fall will be a good one, too.

Everyone has a different perspective on animal sanctuaries or shelters. Many think we are there to serve them. That we are a place to take in any and all animals. We are there for their convenience to surrender their animals when they no longer want them, or to take in the litters they had because they failed to neuter or spay their pets.

In April, we were approached by a very kind gentleman who was very worried about two very young cats who were born on his property. Their mother had disappeared and the brother and sister were left to fend for themselves. They were under a year old and he did not want the same fate to fall on them as it did with their mom.
I met Ellen Cotton after we both moved back to Houlton from the southern part of Maine. She visited the shelter often after I was employed as a manager in 2016.

Here in Aroostook County we have experienced a pretty nice summer so far. Although we had record rainfall for June, we haven’t seen too many storms, but it doesn’t hurt to know some handy tips when the skies darken and the rolling thunder begins.
