50 Years Ago – July 3, 1974
Ashland a Right to Read site — SAD 32, which included Ashland, Garfield Plantation, Masardis, Oxbow Plantation and Portage Lake, was one of 13 school systems to be selected as participating sites in the Right to Read Project for 174-75 by the Maine Department of Educational and Cultural Services.

Flowers Planted at Peace Pole – On May 27, second graders from Houlton Elementary School planted marigolds around the Peace Pole in Monument Park. Each child grew one plant from seed in the greenhouse at the school.

Caribou, New Sweden racers compete in Houlton’s derby — For the first time in four years, an out-of-town racer took the checkered flag in the Stock division of the Northern Maine Soap Box Derby Race held last Saturday on Drakes in Houlton.

Local trio earned accreditation — Denise Green and Julie Freeman of Presque Isle and Shellie Doody-Corriveau of Caribou, teachers at Aroostook Gymnastics in Caribou, had all attended the USA Gymnastics Kinder Accreditation for Teachers (KAT) Workshop, an important step in self-education.

Star City’s first feminine mechanic — The only female garage mechanic in the city, and possibly the area, enjoyed the process of taking a faulty machine apart, finding out what’s wrong with it, fixing it back together again so that it works once more. Stephanie Gilbert, a graduate of Northern Maine Vocational Technical Institute’s automobile mechanics course, went to work for Silver’s Garage on Houlton Road.

New store opened — The opening of the new F. W. Woolworth store took place last Friday and was attended by hundreds of people, who not only enjoyed the fine music discoursed by a local orchestra, but the large and varied assortment of goods on display.

Catherine Bell Is Elected By State BPW — Mrs. Catherine B. Bell of Houlton was installed as State President  of the Maine Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs, at its 53rd Annual Convention June 7-9 at Shawmut Inn in Kennebunkport.

100 Years Ago – June 12, 1924
First place winner — Miss marguerite Dudley, a senior in the Caribou High school, won the first place in the typewriting contest at the fourth annual county convention for commercial subjects in Houlton Saturday, her average being a net of 61 11-15 words a minute.
