The Maine Bureau of Highway Safety is working with Maine law enforcement agencies to raise awareness of the dangers of impaired driving in a “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign now through Sept. 1.
Around them rose nearly a dozen other balloons, dotting the early morning sky with splashes of color and officially kicking off the 2025 Crown of Maine Balloon Festival.
Among the candidates were a former city manager, a hairdresser, a health care worker, a bus driver, a retiree and several previous City Council candidates.
“I can admit when I made a mistake, and I made a mistake on this,” Harold Hull, one of three councilors who originally voted to approve the policy, said.
“Hot air balloons are magical, whether you are three years old and you’re seeing one for the first time or you’re 70 years old and sitting on your deck drinking coffee and one flies overhead.”
