STACYVILLE, Maine — For the second time in the past two weeks, Katahdin Elementary School was evacuated because of a bomb scare.

Sgt. Josh Haines of the Maine State Police Troop F barracks stated Wednesday afternoon that state police responded to KES Wednesday morning after a student discovered the word “bomb” carved into a wall of a girls bathroom.

School administrators notified police at about 9:05 a.m. and began evacuating students.

“School officials and troopers along with a state police explosives detection canine checked the school and found no evidence of explosives in the school,” Sgt. Haines stated in a press release. “This investigation is currently active and ongoing.”

While the threat was found at the elementary school, students from Katahdin Area High School, located across the road, also were evacuated until KES could be deemed safe, according to the release.

The release did not indicate if or when students were allowed to return to classes on Wednesday. Efforts to reach both schools and the superintendent’s office by phone Wednesday afternoon were unsuccessful.

Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact Trooper Tim Saucier of the Maine State Police in Houlton at 532-5400.
