MAPLETON, Maine — The SAD 1 board of directors honored six retiring faculty members and voted in new staff during its meeting on Wednesday, June 12.
The board presented retirees with a plaque honoring their years of service to the school district.

Fellow teachers of SAD 1 thanked the retirees by giving speeches to the board, recognizing their years of dedication to their students and communities.
Some retirees honored during the meeting have taught in the area for more than 20 years.
Students from the elementary schools also participated in the evening. Three students from Mapleton Elementary accompanied their teacher, Valerie Black, to share their experiences with taking part in the Maine Student Book Award program. The statewide program is designed to promote reading in grades four through eight by having students read and then vote for their favorite books.

Interim superintendent Dr. Gehrig Johnson praised the Mapleton Elementary school staff for winning the “Workplace Campaign of the Year” award from United Way this past year, as well.
Board chairwoman Lucy Richard said winning the award was “just another example of how great our teachers are.”
The board also noted a change in staff during the meeting. The current interim superintendent, Dr. Johnson will be replaced by Ben Greenlaw, principal of Presque Isle High School, beginning in January.
Johnson said that Greenlaw will work alongside him for six months until January when he becomes the new superintendent of the district.
Dave Bartlett, who currently serves as assistant principal of Presque Isle High School, is expected to take Greenlaw’s role as principal next year.
The next SAD 1 board meeting will take place on Aug. 14, with no meeting scheduled in July.
