Distance stars lead the way for an outstanding second meet

BANGOR, Maine — Varsity track & field was back to the races on Saturday, April 27 at Cameron Stadium in Bangor.  Nine schools competed in this second week of competition including Fort Fairfield, Fort Kent, Old Town, Piscataquis, Presque Isle, Southern Aroostook, Washburn, host Bangor and our Houlton/Hodgdon/GHCA Shires. The weather was absolutely perfect for a meet and really set the stage for how the rest of the day played out. Our team would have 11 athletes hit new personal bests across 19 events, most of which came from our veterans in the long distance events.

In the girls’ meet, the day was highlighted by tremendous efforts from our pair of distance running powerhouses Natalie Johnson and Teanne Ewings. Ewings started the excitement off with a bang as she nearly broke the five minute barrier in the 1,600, just missing by about three seconds. Johnson would go on and run a fantastic 1,600 as well but shined in her 800 season debut running to her new personal best.

Teanne Ewings cruises to a new career best and program/school record in the girls 3,200 at 10:48.28. Her time is currently second best in the state, regardless of class.

Moments later in the girls 3,200 both Johnson and Ewings would crack major time barriers as Ewings would go under 11 minutes for the near 2-mile race and record her career best and new school record in the 3,200 with a time of 10 minutes, 48.28 seconds which is currently the second best in the state of Maine regardless of class.

Johnson would cruise to just under the 12-minute barrier for the first time — good for second place and her new career best time.  Also recording new bests were Amelia Drake (discus), Ella McCarthy (100, 200) and Dalylah Mincey (javelin).

The sophomore athlete ran in each of the long distance events setting new marks in each as well as shattering his career best in the javelin. Freshman distance standout Malachi Witmer and mid-distance specialist Landon Laferriere also would have tremendous efforts as they too would notch new career marks.

Ethan Casale was up first in the boys shot put, nearly setting a new best in the event.
