Get pets when children are older

Oh the thought of getting a puppy to grow up with your baby feels so right. It sounds wonderful and in the movies it looks wonderful, but honestly, it is more like a recipe for a nervous breakdown! Well, that might be a little harsh, but there is a lot to consider.
If you are pregnant and considering a puppy, my advice is DON’T DO IT. We tend to have these thoughts like, “When the baby comes, I will have so much time on my hands, I can handle a puppy” or “They will be so cute together and grow up together.” Being a Mom takes a lot of time and energy, more than you will ever imagine. Then there are the messy diapers and housebreaking a puppy at the same time, holy cow! I can feel the tension and frustration building, then the chewing of the puppy and the baby putting everything, and I mean everything, in his mouth as he gets a bit older.
What makes more sense is to wait until your child is a little older, able to help with feeding or at least old enough to be taught right from wrong: Petting the puppy nicely is right, throwing it like a baseball or poking it in the eye is WRONG! The stress created in this situation is not only bad for the parents, but also bad for the child and the puppy. It isn’t fair to anyone.
Much the same can be said for bringing a new kitten into the home. All babies are fragile and they need lots of attention. Have no fear, waiting a while to bring a puppy or kitten into your life will make your life with a new puppy or kitten even more exciting and rewarding. Let your child be a part of the process in selecting a pet, do it as a family. The puppy or kitten will bond more with a child who is able to care for it and love it than to a newborn baby. Please think about it for everyone involved. Adopting a pet should be a lifelong commitment and should be taken seriously. You must consider what is best for everyone involved.
