Memorial Day marked with parades, ceremonies

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine – The annual Memorial Day Parade made its way through downtown Presque Isle on May 29, with many spectators turning out to watch the event. Parade participants ranged from former military personnel, the Presque Isle High School marching band, beauty queens, North Star Search and Rescue team, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, firefighters, antique cars, Anah Temple Shrine Indy cars, horses and even two goats this year.

A sprinkling of flags were seen throughout the parade, reminding all who attended of the significance of the day and the freedoms military personnel continue to ensure for citizens of the United States. The day kicked off with a ceremony at Fairmount Cemetery, with the parade starting from the University of Maine at Presque Isle. After a brief stop at the Park Street Bridge for the tossing of the wreath remembering soldiers who’ve died at sea, the parade continued on to the Military Park on north Main Street. Once at the park, a brief ceremony was held and two benches were dedicated for visitors to enjoy on future stops. This year, Wendell Perry served as grand marshal.
