Special to the Star-Herald

This year’s Paws for the Cause was again a total success! We made approximately $3,030 and had a wonderful turnout of walkers, supporters and pets. The weather could not have been any better and the support we were shown from the community left us feeling very fortunate. We are all thankful for each and every person who helped to make this fund-raiser a success, even if you only told a friend, it is helpful to us. It was amazing to watch the parade of dogs and walkers (and the mini horse) as they started the walk. It appeared that everyone had a great time.

After the walk, we awarded prizes at the end of the walk. Prizes awarded : Smallest Dog – Yoko (Donna Thibodeau).  Largest Dog:  Wolfie (Tammy Doyle), Hairiest Dog:  Bella (Terry Palmer),  Dog with the Biggest Smile: Cajun (Judy Deschaine) and  Most Unique: Mini horse (Susan Monpetit).
Most money raised:  Rick Bruce, Mary Nevin and Carol Allen of Cookies & Cuts; Honorable mention for most money raised:  Northeast Publishing, Judy Deschaine, Crystal Belanger and Kimberly Ricciardi.  Thanks, guys, for all of your hard work.
Sharing your life with a pet is a true gift. It was great to see so many wonderful, much-loved pets at our walk. Unfortunately, not every animal is so fortunate. We must be the voice for those who cannot speak. It is important to keep your eyes open and to report animals in distress. As the weather gets warmer, it is dangerous to leave your dog in the car, even with the windows open a little. The temperature in your car can raise quickly, leaving your pet with brain damage or, worse, dead. Also, dogs left outside must have protection from the elements, including sun, and must be provided clean drinking water. It is common sense, but some people just don’t get it and need to be educated. That is the job of your local animal control agent, so give him/her a call if you suspect neglect or an animal in distress.
If you are looking for a friend for life, please visit the Central Aroostook Humane Society. All of our adoptable pets are up to date on shots and altered. We have many wonderful cats and dogs waiting for loving homes. The Central Aroostook Humane Society is open from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday or give us a call at 764-3441. You can also visit us on line at www.centralaroostookhumanesociety.org.
Please have your pets spayed or neutered.
