PRESQUE ISLE, Maine – Presque Isle High School is proud to announce the top five seniors who were recognized at their commencement exercise June 8.
Ranked first among her classmates at PIHS is Sarah Gonsioroski, the daughter of Josh and Launa Gonsioroski. Sarah was a member of the junior varsity soccer team her freshman year, and played varsity soccer grades 10 through 12. She was a member of the school competition play grades 10 through 12, and was inducted into the National Honor Society during her junior year. As a member of the National Honor Society, she has volunteered at Martha and Mary’s Soup Kitchen, Presque Isle Middle School, and the PIHS annual blood drive. At this year’s academic awards assembly, Sarah received a Lamp of Learning Bar and Honor Bar to be placed on her previously awarded Academic Letter, a four-year academic honors certificate, the Husson College Award and the English Department award. Sarah plans to attend Black Hills State University in South Dakota with a major in History Education.
Graduating second in Presque Isle High School’s Class of 2007 is Shane Ireland, the son of Judy and Mark Ireland. Shane played junior varsity soccer his freshman year and has worked as a volunteer on the Make-a-Wish playhouse. At this year’s academic awards assembly, Shane received a Presidential Honors Award, a four-year academic honors certificate, and Lamp of Learning and Honor bars to be placed on his previously earned Academic Letter. An avid outdoorsman, Shane enjoys snowmobiling, hunting, and fishing. This fall, he plans to attend NMCC with a planned major in Electrical Construction.
Whitney Jandreau, the daughter of Roland and Linda Jandreau, graduated third among the Class of 2007. During her high school career, Whitney was a member of the junior varsity basketball team for two years and played volleyball for three. Her classmates elected her to be junior class vice president and senior class president. Whitney has been a strong advocate for the Aroostook Teen Leadership Camp, where she has served on a wide variety of committees. During her junior year, she was inducted into the National Honor Society, and during her senior year, she became an active participant in KEY Club. Whitney won the right to join Earthwatch International in June 2006, during which she worked for two weeks on a scientific expedition in the Virgin Islands. During this year’s academic awards assembly, Whitney received a Presidential Honors Award, a four-year academic honors certificate, the French Department award, and Lamp of Learning and Honor bars to be placed on her previously awarded Academic Letter. She will attend the University of Maine, where she has earned a Top Scholar Award, and will study New Media.
Graduating fourth in the Class of 2007 is Meghann Varnum, the daughter of Brett and Catharine Varnum. As a member of the track and field team, she received the All Aroostook Track and Field award for three years. Meghann was inducted into the National Honor Society during her junior year, and was elected to be secretary her senior year. She has also been a member and this year’s vice president of the KEY Club. Volunteering activities include working at Martha and Mary’s Soup Kitchen, working at the Junior World Cup Biathlon, and tutoring middle school and elementary school students. During her junior year, Meghann was awarded the Women in Engineering Award and was accepted into the Acadia University Discovery Quest program in Nova Scotia. At this year’s academic awards assembly, she received the Science Department award, the Math Department award, a four-year academic honors certificate, and Lamp of Learning and Honor bars to be placed on her previously earned Academic Letter. Next year Meghann plans to study Civil Engineering at the University of Maine, where she has earned a Top Scholar Award.
Molly Hamel, the daughter of Gail and Brian Hamel, has graduated fifth in the Class of 2007. Throughout high school, Molly was a member of the ski, softball, and soccer teams. She earned Top 10 Ski Meister at the county and state levels for three years. During her senior year, she was named varsity soccer captain. Molly was also a member of the band and was selected for All-Aroostook Band and All-State Orchestra. Volunteering activities include working at Martha and Mary’s Soup Kitchen, the Maine Winter Sports Center, Aroostook County Special Olympics events, and at the Presque Isle Rotary Club’s annual auction. She also tutored elementary school students. Molly was inducted into the National Honor Society her junior year and served as parliamentarian her senior year. At this year’s academic awards assembly, Molly received Presidential Honors, a four-year academic honors certificate, and a Lamp of Learning bar to place on her previously earned Academic Letter. In the fall, she will attend Babson College as a business major.
