Organizaztions
The Easton Happy Days Senior Citizens’ Club held their regular meeting on Thursday, Oct. 25, with 14 members and two guests present. After the potluck lunch, the guests, President Donald Zillman, of the University of Maine at Presque Isle, and Public Relations Director Rachel Rice, also from UMPI, spoke to the group about the upcoming ballot on Nov. 6.
They spoke on Question 2 and 3, explaining what the answer ‘yes’ to both Bond issues would mean to the universities and technical colleges in the whole state, impressing on the group the need to train young people with knowledge that might keep them in Maine to work. They told the group about the wind power project the University is planning to build for a saving on energy. They also spoke about the wind power meeting where 125 interested people registered. The University has already received a grant for $50,000 toward this project.
Zillman spoke on how the old-time jobs are disappearing and that the young students need to be trained to handle the new, modern jobs that are beginning. This is what Question 2 is all about. They explained very well the ins and outs of the two bond issues and answered questions from the group, encouraging everyone there to get out to vote.
After the guests had left, club President Marie Hewitt conducted a short meeting. She reminded the group that the annual school Thanksgiving dinner for all senior citizens would be held on Nov. 8 beginning at 12:30 p.m. and that the annual Christmas dinner would be on Dec. 13, also at 12:30 p.m.
A thank-you card was read from a former member, Frank Allen and his new wife, Marion, and a letter from the Easton Housing Corp. from Town Manager Jackie Bradley on making application for housing at the West Ridge Manor, as the state requires. It was voted that there would be no meeting after the Thanksgiving dinner at the school, but that there would be a Yankee Swap and Christmas party after the Christmas dinner at the school.
Another letter was read asking if there might be someone that would be able to be a volunteer to drive people to appointments. There was no one who thought they could do it at this time. A get-well card was to be sent to Alberta Flannigan who was injured in a fall and a belated birthday card to a former member, Loretta Brown, at Leisure Gardens.
Those attending besides the guests were: Duncan and Dottie Beaton, Marie Hewitt, Glenice Craig, Avis Hume, Arlene Ladner, Edith Fuller, Ezalee Smith, Lindy Fowler, Eldora Carter, Marjorie Corey, Liana DeMerchant, Vera Cullins and Rena Richardson.
Wreath and centerpiece projects will be held at the Frances Malcolm Science Center on Nov. 13, 15, 16 and 17. The 13th and 15th will be for adults only and will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.. On the 16th it will be for families and will also be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. On the 17th this will also be for families but will be held from 10 to 12 p.m. The cost will be $8 per person and all supplies and materials will be supplied by the Science Center. They would like you to call to tell them when you will be there so that they can make sure that they have all the materials that are needed. There will be someone there who can help you assemble the wreath or centerpiece if you do not know how. All are welcome.
Party
Arlene Ladner recently held a special Monday morning brunch at her home for her sister-in-law, Louise Libby, of Fort Fairfield, who was celebrating her 80th birthday. Those attending were: her sister, Mavis Towle, of Fort Fairfield; and her son, Everett Towle, of Othello, Wash.; Sue and Tim Oldenburg, of Fort Fairfield; Vera Cullins, Lois Ladner and Elizabeth Martin, all of Easton.
Visits
Robert Carter and companion, Lorna Plourde, of South Berwick, spent a few days in Presque Isle week before last and while here enjoyed supper with his brother and wife, Clair and Eldora Carter. Their sister, Judy Heath, of Patten, joined them and stayed a couple of nights with Clair and Eldora. Bob and Lorna had just gotten back from a senior citizens’ tour to Calgory and Bamph, in Canada, so cut their visit here a little short to get back home to rest. Bob did get in some golf and Lorna some Bingo with friends.
Moved
Bob McPherson has purchased the Winston “Wink” Larsen house on the Gray Road and has moved. Bob had made his home in the house which was Madeline Gardner’s on the Station Road.
Hospitalized
Alberta Flannagan was taken to the Aroostook Medical Center on Thursday, Oct. 17, after suffering a fall at her home and injuring her head and neck. As of Friday, Oct. 26, she is still hospitalized.
Veterans recognized

If you did not attend last year or did not have a picture for our slide show, please feel free to bring one active duty and one current picture to the Easton High School by Monday, Nov. 5. Also, if you have any memorabilia that you would be willing to share in a ‘museum,’ please bring this to the Easton Elementary School by Monday, Nov. 5. Please don’t forget to label your pictures and special mementos to reclaim them when you come on Thursday. Senior citizens attending the Thanksgiving dinner will be treated to this assembly as well.
