Nov. 11 is a day for pause to honor all those that selflessly have and continue to give of the time and lives to preserve our freedoms. The United Vets Motorcycle Club chooses to honor all veterans by giving back to their communities’ children. They work tirelessly in support of children and their families in times of need. They meet monthly and, even when not able to ride, plan ongoing projects and functions.
Many of the activities they sponsor throughout the year, enable the United Vets to contribute both financially and of their time. Just a few of the ongoing projects they participate in are rides that allows the club to make donations to the “Make A Wish Foundation” and the “Dress A Child” Project.
This year’s annual Teddy Bear Run enabled the group, with help from other area cycle clubs, to collect a huge number of teddy bears to benefit Houlton Regional Hospital, TAMC and Cary Medical Center ER Department. These bears and stuffed animals help children in these facilities who need the comfort and security of something tangible that is theirs and they can connect with for comfort in a sometimes trying and scary time.
Another annual function that is one of the highlights of the United Vets Motorcycle Club year is the Toy Run. Riders from all over Aroostook County participate and gather gifts to benefit Aroostook County children whose families may be struggling financially and/or emotionally.
This year, the United Vets said goodbye to a longtime member and fellow vet, Byron Adams who passed away this summer. They will also prepare to send off an officer, as SFC Harold Maker prepares for deployment to Afghanistan shortly after the holidays.
