Two people were killed Tuesday morning during a motor vehicle accident on Route 1 just north of the VFW hall in Caribou, according to local police.     The deceased were identified as Ricky Fortin, 46, and Daniel Andretta, 30. Police said both victims were from Caribou.
The accident occurred at about 7:35 a.m. when Fortin was loading waste into a 2007 International truck owned by Jack Herbert of McNeal’s Trucking of Caribou. The truck was parked in the breakdown lane, police said.
A 2001 Dodge Durango, driven by Andretta apparently lost control going north on the snow and ice-covered road and crashed into the back of the truck where Fortin was working, according to police.  Both individuals were killed on the scene, police said.
Traffic was rerouted for about two hours this morning while police investigated the accident.
Caribou Police Officers Mark Gahagan and Kevin St. Peter were assisted at the scene by the Caribou Fire & Ambulance Department.
